The Lantern Through The Mind
The following explores a continuous “lean inner “recognition” exit process,” from karmic momentum into awakened awareness
Releasing karmic debt into awareness
The essential point:
Karmic debt dissolves when the mind stops feeding the subconscious patterns created by self‑adherence attachment.
This is what Tibetan Dharma calls bringing all phenomena onto the inner path (aware method) — transforming body, speech, and mind at the moment they arise.
How karmic debt is released
- Body — stop acting from unconscious habit; act from aware conduct.
- Speech — stop reinforcing ego narratives; speak from clear intention.
- Mind — stop solidifying thoughts/emotions; rest them in bare awareness.
This is the “lean exit”: no drama, no metaphysics — simply not continuing the pattern.
Clearing the subconscious “leftovers”
Could consider the metaphor of the half‑eaten ham sandwich here. In Dharma terms, these leftovers are:
- Bag chags — karmic imprints
- Kleshas — emotional obscurations
- Conceptual residues — unexamined views
- Energetic knots — somatic traces of past reactions
These leftovers cause mischief because they continue operating beneath awareness, shaping perception and behaviour.
The antidote is recognition + release:
- Recognise the pattern as it arises
- See its emptiness
- Let it dissolve in awareness
This is the functional meaning of purification.
Planting a healthy inner aware mind diet 🌱
A “good diet” for mind means cultivating conditions that allow wisdom to grow. In Tibetan Dharma this is the two accumulations:
1. Merit
The capacity of mind to understand, apply, and stabilise Dharma awareness practice. Merit strengthens the mind so it can uphold awareness without collapsing into subconscious (unaware) self-adherence automated habit patterns.
2. Wisdom
Direct recognition of emptiness — the nature of phenomena and mind, (or the emptiness of dependent origination). “Form is emptiness, emptiness is form. Form is none other than emptiness, emptiness is none other than form,” (Heart Sutra). Just as a rainbow appears in the sky, it appears due to various causes, effects and conditions but is ultimately empty, (empty yet appears).
Utilising compassionate skilful means for example arising The Four Immeasurables qualities, or the practice of the six paramitas, (which encompasses the whole path to awakening) for example. Compassionate method realising wisdom awareness, (ultimately indivisible); together they create the conditions for the lotus to rise from the mud, (of unconscious habit patterns in the mind).
Universal mind‑plumbing
Next consider the following: “universal mind plumbing” to explore how Tibetan yogis describe internal Dharma:
- Clear the channels (tsa)
- Balance the winds (lung)
- Stabilise awareness (rigpa)
- Transform karmic patterns (bag chags)
- Rewire habitual perception (drishti)
This is not mystical — it is functional psychology applied through awareness.
The result is the two‑fold benefit:
- Self — clarity, stability, non‑reactivity
- Others — compassion, patience, skilful means
Loving‑kindness ❤️ and compassion as stabilisers
Generating metta, ahimsa and karuna stabilises the mind because:
- They counteract self‑adherence
- They soften emotional rigidity
- They open the channels of awareness
- They reduce karmic reactivity
- They align the mind with reality rather than ego habit
Compassion is not sentimental — it is structural support for wisdom.
Separating ego‑self adherence, from mind health
The following insight helps to stabilise the mind, through generating inner awareness:
Ego‑self adherence is a consumerist appetite habit installed before consciousness fully matured.
It is:
- automatic
- conditioned
- pre‑reflective
- not “you”
- not necessary for wellbeing
By placing ego on the “team bench,” you allow your inner awareness to lead, and wellbeing naturally increases because:
- Awareness is stable
- Ego is reactive
- Awareness is spacious
- Ego is defensive
- Awareness sees truth
- Ego sees threat
This is an inner aware platform path, that is cultivated through generating awareness in the mind; or the awakening mind of bodhicitta. This is specifically to awaken swiftly in order to help benefit beings, and guide mind in awareness beyond continued attachment to the root cause of its suffering.
The unification of the two truths
The culmination of this entire process is recognising:
- Relative truth — functional reality, cause and effect, ethics, compassion
- Ultimate truth — emptiness, non‑self, dependent origination
When these are unified in practice:
- Karma is understood
- Karma is purified
- Karma is not re‑created
This is liberation within the mindstream, not somewhere else.
A concise synthesis
The whole path as one flow can be considered as follows:
- Recognise patterns of self‑adherence.
- Release karmic residues into awareness.
- Stabilise mind through loving‑kindness and compassion.
- Cultivate merit to strengthen understanding.
- Cultivate wisdom to recognise emptiness.
- Apply the inner method through body, speech, and mind.
- Unify the two truths in daily experience.
- Liberate phenomena in their own nature.
This is the lean exit from samsaric habit.

The Lantern Through the Mind
(A Poem)
A lantern flickered deep inside,
Where shadows used to curl and hide,
And every thought that passed a me by
Was stitched with threads of who and why.
Walking the path of old debris,
The echoes of what used to be,
The habits left like scattered crumbs
From all the places mind still runs.
But in the quiet, soft, slow, deep
A whisper rose to awaken from sleep:
“Release the weight you used to bear,
Let every breath become aware.”
So step by step, learning to see
The knots of old identity,
The tales told without a pause,
The fears that never knew their cause.
Placing them gently on the ground,
And watching them fade without a sound;
For once the heart begins to shine forth,
The past no longer sets the course.
A lotus within the mud stirred,
Its petals waking undisturbed,
Of every moment lived in grace—
Awareness blooming into space.
And kindness grew, a steady flame,
A warmth that asked for no one’s name;
Compassion rose, a healing tide,
A friend that walks the path inside.
The lantern glowed with clearer light,
Transforming darkness into sight;
And through that fire, came to find
The quiet truth in wisdom mind.
No longer bound by what was then,
Breathed, and felt no-self again—
A traveller freed from karmic thread,
Care walking where love is spread.
And in that stillness, soft and true,
The world became a gentler view;
For every step in mindful being
Rewrites the story of the inner heart seeing.
